Beginners mind

One of my sources of inspiration is Shunryo Suzuki (1904 – 1971), also named as Suzuki Roshi.
He is a japanese Soto Zen practitioner, who travelled to USA where he founded the Tassahara Zen Mountain Center (among other things). He has written the book: Zen Mind, Beginners Mind, a book which I can highly recommend.

Since it appears to be the nature of our mind in the building up of the ego that we want to be good, clever, experienced – and certainly not beginners – it can be hard to remember, that every now that starts is a new now.

We live in a world of change and in every moment a new beginning is arriving. We are starting all over, new beginnings all the time. The openness of the mind, the curiosity, the willingness to learn and to practise is important. Being alert, wanting to engage – like a cat who has heard a mouse in the grass. Attention fully focused, not having to think, just knowing that one is in the right place at the right time. This mouse, or catching this mouse, is its own unique experience.

Like the archer who aims the arrow. This arrow has never left the bow before.

Mind and consciousness

When we work with meditation we say that we work with cultivating our minds. Looking inside, discovering, becoming aware. The mind can be understood as our inner world of thoughts and feelings.

What is then consciousness?
Thoughts, feelings, memories, images from our inner world simply appear in consciousness. Just like sensations and images from the outer world.

Consciousness itself is open and clear, like the sky with no clouds. Or like the surface of the water with no waves. And then, eventually, consciousness is mirroring all the thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations, images of the mind.

Consciousness is neutral, non judgemental. Consciousness is the knowing that we know. We think, but we also know that we think. The knowing of. The raw awareness .

A rose is a rose is a rose.

Follow the breath

Once you have found your seat and sit relaxed, your breath is your “anchor” during your formal practice. And mind you, when you integrate your practise in your daily life, the awareness of your breath is also your anchor.

While breathing in your breath expands your whole body, and this you experience especially in your torso.

While breathing out you experience the opposite of expansion, letting go and body volume getting lesser.

Follow for a couple of minutes this expansion and letting go. In you own rhythm , do not change anything, just be aware.

Just follow the breath.

Sitting on your front porch

Imagine you live in a small, neat and simple cabin. Outside your door is a shedded front porch, here you can sit undisturbed an look at the landscape. Your imagination decides whether it is a woodland, a lake, the sea, mountains or whatever. You love to sit there and drink your tea, just be quiet and peaceful, do nothing but sit there, eyes open, enjoying the landscape.

Maybe a preybird is circling over your head, a falcon or and eagle.

One day you have made yourself a nice cup of tea, the weather is fine, and you sit on your porch.

And then your friends come to visit you, they come in a long row. Where are they coming from, you think, have the rented a bus to come and see you? You nod to them, kindly and in silence, letting them know that this is not the time for a visit, but you will see them again, at another time. And they move on, they pass you, and you are undisturbed.

The thought are like these friends. They come to you whenever you are available. And you can kindly let them go.

Days of concreation – 2

Getting ready

Yesterday was a lovely warm day of spring, the 19th of March, and we were four of us in the Sharing Circle, sharing our needs and reflecting on what is needs, what is wants, and what is desires.

Our community will support us in getting our needs met, and we will cooperate on this.

Afternoon round was Q & A on practicalities, and a lot about legal ownership and organisation models, a new field for all of us to explore.

Next concretion day is May 4th.

At lære at væve – 2

JA!!
